14 Mar How to Choose the Best Drywall Contractor
If you need help hanging drywall in your home, you likely know that this type of job is best left to a professional. Sure, you may be able to pull a few “how-to” videos off the Internet, but if this isn’t something you’re experienced in, the risk of making (expensive) mistakes simply isn’t worth the up-front cost savings.
For this post, we wanted to discuss how to hire the best drywall installer for the job.
Start your search right
The best way to hire a contractor is to ask friends and family if they have a company they can recommend. If you have a coworker who recently hired someone to hang drywall at their home, and the company did a great job, there’s a very good chance you’ll receive the same level of service.
If you need to start your search on the Internet, you’ll want to make sure you’re looking in the right places. Websites like Home Advisor, Angie’s List and Yelp tend to be a good bet. Craigslist, however, isn’t a good choice. When you hire someone off Craigslist there is a good chance they won’t be licensed or insured, which could lead to any number of problems.
Just say no to hiring unlicensed drywall installers.
Interview potential candidates
When you narrow down your search, you’ll want to invite three companies to come to your home to provide you with quotes. When they’re there, you’ll want to ask them a number of questions beyond what the job will cost. Ask how long they’ve been in business, whether they use their own people or if they farm out work to subcontractors and whether they will need to pull permits. You’ll want to get a sense that the company is legitimate, experienced and reputable.
Lastly, ask each service provider to provide you with several local references. The best way to get a true random sampling is to ask for references who have a last name that begins with a specific letter. Ask each reference about the quality of the services they received and whether the work was completed on time and on budget.
