The Advantages of Plaster Walls

When designing a new home or a new build, the first thing that comes to mind for the walls is drywall. It’s common to use, and also the most well-known. Plaster is fast becoming more popular because of its look and ease of installation. Plaster walls are considered high-end and require special training and finishing during the construction process. While drywall is still the more popular – and generally less expensive – choice of most people having builds done, plaster has a host of benefits.

The installation of plaster walls requires special training and skills, making it more labor intensive. However, a plaster wall can create a texture and feel to your home that no other wall can match, and you can design patterns which don’t even exist with drywall. You also don’t have to worry about the dust or mess from drywall, because there aren’t multiple coatings required. It is also considered the more sound-resistant option, because of the tough backing boards and insulation.

Plaster coating creates a stronger and more durable wall finish than drywall. The chemical reaction that occurs when water evaporates out of the plaster mixture develops strong bonds in the mixture. Plaster is more resistant to knocks and dents in most cases. A modern metal lath or tough backing boards are more durable than the thin wooden lath strips used in historical houses, so the end result is a home that is both more durable and stronger in the long run.
